biography

Paolo Cimmino was born in Naples in 1964.

After graduating in 1988, he began his career as a member of the San Carlo Theatre Orchestra of Naples, performing with them for twelve years. During that time he also studied ethnic music and jazz.

Currently, Paolo teaches percussion at G. Martucci Conservatoire in Salerno, frame drums and Principles of Ethnic Music at MusicAteneo of University in Salerno.

He is invited regularly to give master classes throughout Europe in Spain, Croatia, Great Britain, Greece, including the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Franz Liszt Hochschule fur Musik in Weimar, Music Academy in Bijelovar, Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge The Purcell School Londra and of course in Italy - Trento, Fermo, Parma, Roma, Napoli, Bari etc

Paolo is the co-founder of “Società Italiana Tamburi a Cornice” and is continuously working to introduce the possibilities of frame drums to larger audiences

A passionate educator, Paolo has written a wealth of educational material on the “Tamburello” (Italian tambourine like instrument) and its technique, including the highly acclaimed "A new way of playing Tamburello", published by Note di Merito and "5 tamburello solos Ed. Artemide. Norskmusik Forlag published “Hidden tears (Pianto nascosto)” for marimba and tamburello” and “Il Sorpasso“ for SET UP. Edition Svitzer published “Secret Passion” for marimba , strings and percussions. 
He also published a DVD  "La Tammurriata; ancient traditions and future possibilities" and “Solkattu, Groove & Exercise” for Italian tambourine and Frame drums, produced by MusicAteneo.

In addition to his role as an educator, Paolo purses an active freelance career with regular concerts in Italy and the rest of Europe. 
He is a "solista" also in duo "Clay Drums India" with Ghatam Suresh,
and in "Framed Resonance” (
www.framedresonance.com) with marimba player Daniella Ganeva (Royal Collage London) and in MediTamburi Quartet (founded by himself ) (Video).
